T3 external case degradation

Hi,
The external black rubberized case of my T3-BB has become “sticky”. It is now 3-4 years old and has always been inside my office - so no environmental extremes).

Can this stickiness be removed/cleaning (eg by soap+water, solvent???).
Recommendations?

cheers

For a while we were using a rubberized textured coating like you see on some tools in the hardware store. It gave a kind of cool feel to the enclosure but unfortunately over time it absorbs moisture. Currently we use a matte finish applied directly to the mold tooling so there’s no more coating involved.

We can send you a new enclosure with the next shipment heading your way. Let us know how many units you need.

I only need 1 .
My controller is a T3-BB 1kPt with WIFI.

Thanks

Send an email please. If its the original Arm powered unit you may want to consider updating it with the new ESP32 cpu module. I dont see it on the website, will post a link here shortly.

Please advise what the case (substrate) is made of. Polystyrene, ABS, Polycarbonate?

I did some testing on the DIN-rail recess - using different solvents. Regular detergent had no affect. Mineral Turpentine softened but did not remove the now-sticky coating. Alcohol/IPA softened the coating so it could be removed when rubbed.

Is there a better solvent to use - without destroying the case?

What happened to the suggestion of a replacement (coating-free) case?

There is a spec sheet in the ‘certs.zip’ file for the material used in the plastic enclosures, the material is an ABS blend. If you have enclosures with the sprayed on coating and would like to swap them out we can send replacements. Just let us know how many you need.

Here’s the UL listing for the plastic used in the T3 enclosures
