To connect HMI panel to T3-BB via RS485 Modbus I need the Modbus slave ID. Is there a default value? Can it be changed to a custom ID number?

I am not sure what th edefualt is but there’s plenty of tips on the forum here for connecting devices directly and also via subnet. The basic settings you need to pay attention to are the protocol, baud rate, network ID.
T3000 is pretty good at scanning and discovering devices no matter the baud rate or protocol settings.
Reduce the test setup to go one to one if you are having trouble, as in one PC, one RS485 converter, and one device.
As previously noted I had thought to use RS232 for HMI/T3 communications so there are only 2 nodes on that network. This should avoid conflict when T3 communicates with 4 or 5 different Modbus devices via RS485 network. If I use RS485 for both purposes will I not get conflicts between (a) when HMI requests/writes data from/to T3 and (b) when T3 requests data from remote Modbus devices?
I also understand that use of Android tablet HMI connected by WiFi as you suggest would also avoid conflicts - but I haven’t made that leap yet.
I previously purchased and prefer to use a “simple” touchscreen for HMI. Still a work in progress…
Give it a try and see how it goes, you might lose a few packets here & there. The T3 supports two RS485 subnets so you could put the tablet on one subnet and the other devices on the second subnet.
The wifi would be my first choice, the Android tablet will be like any other PC running T3000 on the lan.
